Shillong, Aug 15: Along with the rest of the country,Meghalaya today celebrated the 79th Independence Day.
In the state capital Shillong, the celebration was held at J.N. Stadium, Polo Grounds, wherein Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma hoisted the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salute of the 35 Marching Contingents comprising of the Border Security Force, CRPF, East Khasi Hills Special Operation Team, 1st MLP Bn., 5th IRBN Arunachal Pradesh, NCC Boys & Girls, Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides, Loreto Convent School, Sacred Heart Girls Hr. Sec. School, Mawngap District Christian Multipurpose Sec. School, Holy Cross Sec. School, St. Mary’s Higher Sec. School, Stephen Memorial Sec. School, St. Joseph Hr. Secondary School, BSF Boys Sec. School, BSF Girls Sec. School, St. Gabriel Hr. Sec. School, Laban Bengalee Boys Hr. Sec. School, St. Anthony’s Hr. Sec. School, Hubert Memorial Sec. School, Pine Mount Hr. Sec. School, B K Bajoria Hr. Sec. School, Synod Hr. Sec. School, All Saints Hr. Sec. School, Brookside Hr. Sec. School, Auxilium Hr. Sec. School, Assam Rifles Public School Horse Riding Contingent and Brass Bands from Border Wing Home Guard, BSF, Sacred Heart Boys Hr. Sec. School, St. Margaret Hr. Sec. School and Auxilium Hr. Sec. School.

Police Medal for Meritorious Service to Billygraham R Marak, Commandant and Allan Eddie Marbaniang, Asst. Sub Inspector, and Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service to Rokesh Warjri, Leading Fireman were announced during the day.
Further on the occasion, Badalyne Kharkongor, Divisional Commandant of Home Guards, Shillong Home Guards Division and Naik Parsing Ch Marak, Central Training Institute of Civil Defence & Home Guards were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal from the Civil Defence & Home Guards Department of the State.
On the occasion, certificates were also distributed to the top performing hospitals (both public and private) under East Khasi Hills District for best implementation of MHIS-PMJAY scheme. Top performing PHC was awarded to Dangar PHC, top performing CHC to Mawphlang CHC, top performing Maternal & Child Hospital to Ganesh Das Government Maternal & Child Hospital and top performing private hospital was awarded to Nazareth Hospital.
Prizes were also distributed to the winners of March Past where Loreto Convent School, BSF Girls Hr. Sec. School and St. Joseph Hr. Sec. School won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. In the Brass Band, Sacred Heart Boys Hr. Sec. School, St. Margaret Hr. Sec. School and Auxilium Girls Hr. Sec. School won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. In the cultural programme, Pine Mount Hr. Sec School, Auxilium Girl Hr. Sec. School, St. Anthony’s Hr. Sec. School won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively.
