Meghalaya CM Inaugurates State Guest House, Taraghar

Shillong, Sept 16: The Government of Meghalaya today inaugurated the newly constructed State Guest House, Taraghar, Shillong, in a grand ceremony graced by the Chief Minister, Shri Conrad K. Sangma, as the Chief Guest.

Delivering his address as Chief Guest, Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, described the inauguration as a milestone achievement, symbolic of the government’s broader commitment to strengthening Meghalaya’s identity and infrastructure.

He recalled that since 2018, initiatives such as adopting the State emblem and the state anthem, as well as developing infrastructure like the guest house, have been foundational in building pride and efficiency in governance.

He also highlighted Meghalaya’s record economic growth, the government’s continued focus on health and education and ongoing investments around Ward’s Lake to complement the new facility.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, in his address, reflected on the absence of a state guest house for nearly 25 years and underscored the importance of taking decisive action despite criticism.

He described the new Guest House as a “gift to the people of Meghalaya,” and urged that it be showcased at the national level, including to the Prime Minister during his visits to the State.

D.P. Wahlang, IAS, Chief Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, emphasized the significance of the new guest house in strengthening the State’s ability to host distinguished visitors.

He noted that the facility, comprising 18 premium rooms including executive and VIP suites, will not only enhance Meghalaya’s image but also result in significant cost savings compared to earlier practices of hosting guests in private hotels.

Earlier, C.V.D. Diengdoh, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, General Administration Department, delivered the welcome address, extending gratitude to all dignitaries and highlighting the vision and effort behind the project.

He recalled that work began on 14th September 2022, with the old structure being replaced by this state-of-the-art facility, constructed at a cost of ₹24.91 crores. He noted that operations and maintenance have been entrusted to Hotel Polo Towers through an open competitive bidding process, ensuring world-class hospitality standards.

The inauguration of the State Guest House marks a significant step in enhancing Meghalaya’s hospitality infrastructure, ensuring that the State is well-prepared to host national and international dignitaries with dignity and pride.
