Shillong, Aug 19: The high-octane North East derby lit up the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Polo, Shillong, as defending champions NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) took on homegrown Shillong Lajong FC in the semi-final of the 134th Durand Cup.
Organised by the Indian Armed Forces and supported by the Government of Meghalaya, the evening witnessed a fully packed stadium brimming with electrifying energy, as thousands of fans draped in team colours created an unforgettable spectacle. The roars, chants, and festive spirit transformed Shillong into the beating heart of Indian football.

This marquee semi-final, the last match of the 134th Durand Cup in Shillong, will be remembered as a historic milestone for the state’s sporting journey. It showcased not only the passion of the people but also Meghalaya’s growing sports infrastructure and upgraded facilities that have made the JN Stadium a premier football destination in the country. Notably, Meghalaya is hosting the 39th National Games in 2027. The consecutive hosting of Durand Cup is a testament to state’s readiness and growing sporting prowess.
The match was graced by Shri Sniawbhalang Dhar, Deputy Chief Minister; Bah Paul Lyngdoh, Hon’ble Tourism Minister; Dr P. Shakil Ahmed, IAS, Principal Secretary, Government of Meghalaya and other dignitaries included Lt. General Sanjay Malik, General Officer Commanding, 101 Area; Lt. Gen. Abhijit S. Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding, 3 Corps; Shri Rajesh Nambiar, Executive Director, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, including local officials, added to the vibrant atmosphere, celebrating the region’s footballing heritage. The dignitaries lauded the enthusiasm of the fans and the commitment of the organisers in bringing top-tier football to Meghalaya.

Shillong Lajong’s sheer domination in the first 20’ minutes was commendable; however, NEUFC’s jersey number 22, Redeem Talang, delivered an impressive opening goal at the 35’minute securing an early lead for the team.
