As we all know, the first few years of a child’s life are the most critical in shaping their future. The health and well-being of our children are the foundation upon which the future of our state and country rests. During this stage, they are most vulnerable to preventable diseases. This is where immunization plays a key role—protecting our children from deadly diseases and ensuring they grow up strong, healthy, and able to achieve their full potential.
In our efforts to protect children, the Pentavalent vaccine has become a crucial part of our immunization program. The Pentavalent vaccine combines protection against five dangerous diseases: Diphtheria, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Tetanus, Hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). These diseases can cause severe health complications such as brain damage, paralysis, and even death. The Pentavalent vaccine is vital in preventing these diseases and significantly contributes to reducing infant mortality and morbidity in our state.
How to Avail the Pentavalent Vaccine
The Pentavalent vaccine is available at all Government Health Facilities (Free of cost0) and Private Hospitals. Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit the nearest Health Facilities to schedule vaccination appointments for their children, along with the MCP card.
The vaccine is administered as part of the routine immunization schedule. It is essential to complete the entire vaccination series to ensure maximum protection. The first dose is given at 6 weeks of age, followed by two additional doses at 10 weeks and 14 weeks.
Special Sessions:
- Dates: Special sessions will be available on 27th & 28th December 2024 at selected Health Facilities.
- Regular Availability: Apart from these dates, the vaccine is available every immunization day (every Wednesday of the week).
What to Do and Not to Do After Vaccination What to Do:
- Monitor for Side Effects: It is common for children to experience mild side effects such as fever, redness, or swelling at the injection site. These reactions are usually temporary and should resolve within a few days.
- Provide Comfort: If your child has a fever over 100°F, offer Paracetamol Syrup(appropriate dose as advise your ANM/ASHA) and inform the ANM/Medical Officer if necessary. Provide fluids and comfort measures to ease any discomfort or mild fever.
- Follow Up: Ensure that the child receives subsequent doses as per the schedule to ensure full immunity.
What Not to Do:
- Do Not Skip Doses: Missing a dose can reduce the vaccine’s effectiveness. Ensure all doses are completed as per the recommended schedule.
- Do Not Delay Vaccination: Delaying the vaccine may leave the child vulnerable to preventable diseases. Stick to the recommended age and schedule.
- Do Not Panic Over Mild Reactions: Mild reactions such as fever or swelling are normal. However, if your child experiences severe reactions (e.g., high fever, difficulty breathing, or persistent crying), seek medical attention immediately.
The Pentavalent vaccine is a powerful tool in the fight against preventable diseases, providing children with protection against life-threatening conditions. All parents and caregivers must get their children vaccinated on time. Immunization is a proven and effective way to protect children and communities. It is safe, and it is the best gift we can give to our children for a healthy future. Together, we can help safeguard the health of future generations.
